Start with the face, not the outfit

It's tempting to start with the fit, because clothes are the fun part. Start with the face anyway. Eye shape, brow and expression do most of the work in making a figure read as a specific person, and every outfit decision after that is easier once the face is right.

Hair is where it starts to look like someone

Hair carries more identity than any other single part. Locs, braids, waves, bobs, fades — pick the style first, then the colour, which runs from jet black through to neon pink.

If you're designing a figure of yourself and you're not sure which style is closest, pick the one with the right silhouette rather than the right texture. Silhouette is what you read from across a room, which is how a figure on a shelf is usually seen.

Dress it in something you'd actually recognise

The fit is the part people get wrong by over-thinking. A figure of someone is more recognisable in the outfit they wear constantly than in the one they'd wear to a wedding. Knits, bombers, denim, layers — choose the everyday one.

Then extras: chains, earrings, glasses, hats, shoes. These are the details that make a design feel finished, and they're also the ones that make it unmistakably one person rather than a generic figure.

Pick a size last, once you know where it's going

Size doesn't change your design at all — the same build is made at any scale — so leave it until the end. A 12" sits beside a monitor, an 18" holds a shelf, and a 24" is the centrepiece of a room.

You don't have to finish in one sitting. Signed in, you can save a design to My Figures and reopen it later, and you can save as many versions as you like to compare fits side by side.
